Yongala is located in the District of Peterborough in the mid-north of South Australia. It was proclaimed in 1876 when developers anticipated that a new railway line would run through the town. Instead, the railway ran through Peterborough and the town never reached its anticipated potential. Yongala has the reputation of having recorded the lowest temperature in South Australia of -8.2°c or 17.2°F on 20 July 1976.
